Married to Barbara

Part-6-of-12

.

.

When our son was about 8 or 9 one of our favorite restaurants was a Wyatt’s Cafeteria, which at the time was one of the better restaurants in our little town. They had gotten a handsome new assistant manager about our age. I guess Barbara was more naïve then I thought because there was something about him that I couldn’t believe she couldn’t see. We were eating at lunch one Saturday and he was sitting at a table where he could see our party going through the line and then going to our table. By the time we got to our table Barbara was practically preening with excitement because this handsome young guy couldn’t keep his eyes off her. She was so excited that she almost couldn’t eat she was so excited. Rather than bust her bubble, I tried to let her down easy by cautioning her not to read too much into his attention…while she was giving me hell being jealous because another man found her attractive. Right in the middle of her tirade the guy’s boyfriend showed up. This was about 71 or 72 and due to public opinion gays were still about 2-miles back in the closet, so the outward show of affection was VERY, VERY unusual…but when the boyfriend showed up the manager leaped up and helped his boyfriend with his chair which he made sure was very close to his…when she realized what the situation was she was so embarrassed that she didn’t speak to me and our son during the rest of the meal. Actually the whole incident embarrassed her so bad that I got the silent treatment for almost a week and as a family we never ate at Wyatt’s again…the powder blue leisure suit that the guy was wearing should have been a dead give away. He was just too neat and pretty to be a normal guy…

To be continued…
